"The Holzmarkt adjoins the Großer Markt to the south-west of the Rheinstraße. A row of houses with three gabled houses from the 16th century has been preserved. The house "Im Scheffel" with its late Gothic, stepped brick gables from the year 1560 is particularly worth seeing. Today the gabled house houses the Italian restaurant Caruso im Scheffel.

The wood market got its name from the sale of wood and willow rods that took place here. As a result of a special permit from the elector, building materials and fuel could be cut free of charge by the citizens in the surrounding forests.

People met at the Holzmarkt pump to fetch water every day and exchanged the latest news.

The so-called "well or pump neighborhoods" emerged, originally to ensure clean water. In times of need, however, other, neighborly help was also provided. A Pütz (well) or pump master was elected from the community. He was responsible for maintaining the well or the pump, and there always had to be a filled fire bucket at each pump. The pump master was employed by the neighborhood and received a wage of 23 silver groschen."
