'The Rings' are a work of Daniel Buren and Patrick Bouchain located on the quay of the Antilles on the island of Nantes. They were created for the Estuaire 2007 contemporary art festival. Along the Loire and the banana shed, the work is composed of 18 rings of galvanized steel of 4 meters in diameter and silver color, fixed on the old bollards of the wharf, equidistant one behind the other. At night, LEDs illuminate the rings, alternating reds, greens and blues. Daniel Buren wanted to inscribe his work in the history of the city and its geography. Thus, circles formed refer to the rings that enshrouded and imprisoned slaves, in reference to the triangular trade in which Nantes was the hub in the eighteenth century.
