    For years, the Anna mine in Alsdorf was the flagship of the Eschweiler Mining Association.

    The burgeoning industrial revolution developed a significant demand for coal in the mid-19th century. The new "gold rush" also gripped the financial world. Well-known bankers and industrialists from Cologne and Aachen searched for the continuation of the coal seams emerging in Wurmtal.

    In 1847, near the small village of Alsdorf, search drillings were carried out into the hard coal mountains with the coveted coking coal seams - under an approximately 85 meter thick layer of sand, gravel and clay. The Anna mine was built here by the Aachen justice of the peace Friedrich Bölling, the Düren cloth manufacturer Leopold Schoeller and the Markscheider mining authority assessor Eduard Honigmann. The Anna pit was initially near Alsdorf, but over the years residential areas, shops and restaurants settled in its vicinity, so that it was soon in the center of Alsdorf.

    Pioneering work was done in the sinking of the Hermann and Josef shafts, since the pocket drilling method was used for the first time to penetrate water-bearing strata (the so-called Honigmann method) and the use of tubbings was the first in Germany. In 1854 the promotion could be started.

    As early as 1863, Anna was bought by the Eschweiler Mining Association, which was expanding into the Wurm area. Ideal conditions meant that as early as 1864 the output from Anna corresponded to half of the coal mined in the entire Indian area near Eschweiler. Since the Hermann and Josef shafts could no longer cope with the steadily increasing production volumes, the Franz shaft was sunk in 1869. This remained the main production shaft until 1983, with the exception of the 30-year interlude, which was the main shaft, which was sunk in 1923 first to the 360 meter level, in 1935 to the 460 meter level and in 1937 to the 610 meter level. Between 1965 and 1969, sinking was carried out to the 860 meter level.
