At the Burmania column on the De Slotplaats estate, Bakkeveners have been able to collect their newborn children for more than 250 years. The column is known locally as the Poppestien. 'Poppe' is Frisian for baby. Legend has it that when the lead cock crows, the lower stone tips over and the father can get his newborn son or daughter out from under the stone.
The round natural stone column on the lion's head pedestal dates from the mid-18th century. The estate is then owned by Jonkheer Edzard Hobbe van Burmania, councilor in the Hof van Friesland. In keeping with the fashion of that time, the column stands at a crossroads of paths in the moated Sterrenbos. In the 18th century, the ascending forest around it was still a geometrically arranged garden or plantation, probably planted with coppice. The column will have been clearly visible here.
