His biography reflects the fundamental developments and conflicts of post-war society in the Federal Republic of Germany as if in a magnifying glass. With his self-image as a "German citizen of the Jewish faith," Bubis emphasized the belonging of Jews to German society even after the Holocaust. He advocated that the Jewish community should commit to a permanent life in Germany and open itself up more to the outside world."
