Don't get confused (sometimes Komoot puts highlights together unfortunately due to a lack of local knowledge): the large church on St. Anna-Platz is the newer and rather insignificant parish church. The outwardly inconspicuous monastery church opposite is the real highlight: in the 18th century, the Lehel district was still in front of the city gates and was something that from today's perspective would be described as a slum. The young Johann Michael Fischer, who was to become a very famous master builder, built the monastery church for the newly founded monastery there in 1727-33. Famous names from the Bavarian Baroque are also responsible for the interior design: the Asam brothers and Johann Baptist Straub. The monastery has been run by the Franciscan order since the beginning of the 19th century; a sculpture of Francis on the church forecourt draws attention to this.

Fischer's church interior is considered innovative because it broke up and reshaped familiar spatial concepts - architecture with almost no right angles. After it was almost completely destroyed by a bomb attack in 1944, it took until 1979 for the church to be completely restored.

The Antonius Altar with a relic that Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian brought to Munich as early as 1330 is important for popular piety, making Munich the most important Antonius sanctuary after Padua.

The monastery church of St. Anna opposite the larger St. Anna church next to the St. Anna high school and the St. Anna fountain on St. Anna Square on St. Anna Street. Maybe they weren't that creative when it came to naming it, but it's definitely a place worth seeing with an exciting history - even if you don't have the time or inclination to look at everything inside.
