The Pastoratsberg offers numerous noteworthy views of Werden, some of which can be called quite spectacular due to the steep slope. At night, the illuminated city lies far below the viewer; At the moment, however, many light sources have also been dimmed here in order to save energy.

The Pastoratsberg is located in the Heidhausen district of the Ruhr area city of Essen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located about 500 meters south of Essen's Werden district on a long spur. On this wooded hill above the former cloth-making town of Werden, which can be seen from afar, there are various sights that are closely linked to the history of this part of Essen and the Werden district. On a short hike over the Pastoratsberg you will get to know Werden and Heidhausen from a different perspective.
At the Essen-Heidhausen youth hostel car park on the Pastoratsberg you will find an information board pointing to the so-called "Herrenburg". The Herrenburg is located on the northern part of the Pastoratsberg, a ridge of the Ruhr, which is secured in the west, east and north by deeply incised valleys. The rectory of St. Clemens used to be in the middle of the Franconian Herrenburg complex, hence the name Pastoratsberg. Further south of the Pastoratsberg is the Alteburg, also a ring wall system from Frankish times. The roughly oval ring wall encloses an area of around 150 m x 100 m.
This is where Essen Youth Hostel stands today, during the construction of which parts of the castle were destroyed. The only entrance to the castle was on the west side in the form of a pincer gate. Nothing of this remains today. Archaeological excavations took place in 1928, 1939, 1996 and 2000. The finds from the oldest layer are in the 8./9. or 11./12. Dated century AD. It is assumed today that this castle was used as a refuge, i.e. as a place of refuge for the surrounding residents. It is also assumed that "the Herrenburg could have been intended to protect the monastery founded around 800, especially since it is located in close proximity to the monastery."Further information:
