Tansen, Palpa is located on the ridge of the Mahabharat Range in the mid-hills of western Nepal at the highway between Butwal and Pokhara. To the north, the town is overlooking the winding valley of Kali Gandaki River with magnificent panoramic views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himal. The Siddharta Rajmarg (Highway) passes Tansen on the east. From the intersection at Bartung, it is about a 4-km drive uphill to the town centre.
The narrow roads and alleys are lined with Newari shops, houses, and temples. Besides trade, local Newars are known for traditional metalwork and producing dhaka cloth used in traditional jackets and topis. An important landmark is the octagonal pavilion of Shital Pati.

The site “Medieval Town of Tansen” was submitted by the Government of Nepal to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List - cultural category on 30th January 2008.
