The three ponds on the Kleen Meulen were only constructed around 1970. The Mangelbeek was dammed to irrigate the beds or meadows and to increase the grass yield. At first the ponds were used for breeding carp. After being used as municipal fishponds for several years, they were neglected for fifteen years. Eventually, the 7-hectare pond area came into the hands of Natuurpunt and it was recognized as a nature reserve. Slowly the area was restored. Plant growth and animal life are in full development. The area is accessed via a 3 km signposted walk. This leads, among other things, past the bird hide. From there you have a breathtaking view of the ponds.
