The octagonal brick building was built in 1859 as a combined wind and water mill. At least two predecessors have been identified at a similar location. In 1883 the windmill part was demolished and sold. Although the watermill was still in use, it fell into disrepair. In 1950 the water wheel was lifted out of the silted-up Mühlenbach stream and the interior of the mill was rebuilt. Today it is owned by the city and has been available to the art association "Die Wassermühle" for exhibitions since 1982. In 2014, the water mill was renovated and a functional extension was added. Weddings have been possible there ever since. The water mill has 25 seats and a few more standing places.

You will find parking spaces at the Ludgerus factory in Mühlenstraße, from where it is only a few meters to the water mill. However, the number is limited.

The building has been owned by the city since 1975; after thorough renovation and installation of a new water wheel, it has been available to the "Kunstverein Die Wassermühle e.V." for exhibitions since 1982. The cultural monument is part of a Ensemble, which includes the Möhring farm, the mill pond, the city park and the open-air stage.After further renovation and expansion, the water mill was reopened with an exhibition by Helmut Helmes on March 7, 2014. The mill wheel has also been restored and is to have electricity in the future The building is used for events such as readings or concerts when there are no exhibitions and is also a popular location for weddings.
