Caterpillar Nest Mountain

Seen from Altenberg, the 827 meter high Raupennest mountain is a striking elevation at the point where the many kilometers long, weather-resistant ridge of the Teplice quartz porphyry narrows to a strip only two hundred meters wide. Granite porphyry borders on the east and Schellerhauer granite on the west.

On the knoll there is an excursion restaurant, which took over the name of the forest, which in turn goes back to an entrepreneurial family called Raupennest from the early days of mining in Altenberg. There had also been mining attempts on this mountain in the past. The name was adopted in the 1920s for an elegant hotel east of the Raupennestberg, which was then used as the "Neues Raupennest" sanatorium in GDR times. In the 1990s, the name was also transferred to the new rehabilitation clinic built on the Galgenteich.
