In the town square there is the Torrazzo di Cremona, located next to the cathedral. This is the symbol of the city and can also be seen from the countryside before the city.
The torrazzo is the tallest medieval brick bell tower in Europe: 112.54 meters high, it is built with a double barrel, that is, it is made up of two towers inserted into each other; a staircase of 502 steps runs through the cavity.
I recommend a refreshment break (there are steps, benches and bars where you can refuel) in this square and visiting the ancient pastry shops to try the various specialities, among which the nougat stands out.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the main place of Catholic worship in the city of Cremona, in Lombardy, the bishopric of the diocese of the same name.
The cathedral is a Romanesque temple that is continually being adapted with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. Inside it preserves notable masterpieces of sculpture and painting, including the avello of SS. Mario and Marta and their sons Audiface and Abaco, originally from Persia and martyred in Rome, known as the "Ark of the Persian martyrs".
The complex consisting of the cathedral, the baptistery and the tower is completely detached from the rest of the urban fabric, being circumscribed by streets and squares (after a series of demolitions carried out in the first half of the twentieth century).
The main facade, flanked by the Torrazzo, overlooks Piazza del Comune (ancient Platea Maior of the medieval city), exactly in front of the Town Hall. Covered with white Carrara and red Verona marble by the Campionesi masters, it is characterized by a large central rose window, the work of Giacomo Porrata da Como (13th century). The front is lightened by a two-storey loggia, interrupted in the middle by the elegant porch surmounted by a loggia with three arches, which house the statues of Sant'Imerio, the Virgin Mary and Sant'Omobono. The two lions that support the columns of the porch are the work of Giovanni Bono da Bissone.
The Renaissance interventions mainly concern the upper part of the facade; Alberto Maffiolo da Carrara, in 1491 erected an attic with four niches.
The two arms (northern and southern) of the transept also end with a facade. That of the northern arm was completed in 1288 but resumed in 1319 to repair the damage of an earthquake, while that of the southern arm was completed in 1374. Both facades have a hut-like shape, with the spire lightened by a gallery with arches at all sixth, a large central rose window and two slightly smaller side rosettes.
The entire building is surmounted by numerous Nordic-inspired spiers. [3] Three dominate the northern facade, three the southern facade, two the apse complex and two the main facade, for a total of ten. The main facade originally had three: the changes made during the Renaissance led to the demolition of the central spire, and the construction of the current turret.
On the right side is the statue of Giovanni Baldesio, a legendary character of the city.

The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1107. Wonderful and very impressive building.
