"Hammer Man" at the Messeturm - FFM 🚴‍♂️

Everyone knows him – the "Hammer Man" in front of the Messeturm, the 21-meter-high, 32-ton sculpture by US artist J. Borofsky, which has been a landmark of Frankfurt's city since its installation on April 23, 1991.

The sculpture is a symbol of work and solidarity for all those who go about their daily work. Powered by a motor, the giant, made of steel and aluminum, brings his hammer down on a symbolic workpiece in all weathers.

Frankfurt, by the way, is not the only city where a Hammer Man goes about his daily work. Other "colleagues" perform their daily work in Basel, Seoul, South Korea, Los Angeles, and Seattle. They are all similar in structure, but can be distinguished from one another by a different number on their back leg. The Frankfurt-based sculpture is the largest of its kind in the world.

To ensure the sculpture doesn't run out of steam in the future, its ten-meter-long, two-ton arm is regularly "amputated." The arm contains the motor and transmission, which were last serviced in 2005 and 2013. Using a 3.5-ton counterweight, the "Hammering Man" generates his characteristic arm movements. This requires around 1,500 motor revolutions, so the hammer moves almost twice per minute. 🚴‍♂️
