    Calasetta was officially founded in 1770, occupying the northwestern end of Sant'Antioco. However, for 13 years already, the territory and the stretch of sea between the largest island of the Sulcis archipelago and that of San Pietro were guarded by the imposing tower which still stands today in the historic center of the town.

      The Calasetta Tower was built between March 1756 and June 1757, in the middle of the Savoyard period, before the founding of Calasetta (1770). In the master plan drawn up by the engineer Pietro Belly (1770) it is stated that this is the plan of the village to be built on the island of Sant'Antioco, near the Torre di Cala di Seta. Local materials (stones and sand) were used to construct the tower. The lime was brought from Porto Paglia.

      Stones lighter than the local trachyte were taken from other nearby sites (probably the Matzaccara area or the island of San Pietro) and transported to the site to be used for the vault. Since the men hired on the same island of Sant'Antioco were not sufficient and it would not have been appropriate to prevent others from agricultural work, unemployed people from Carloforte were hired.
