The Rhine-Herne Canal was built through the middle of existing or future coal mining areas. Since 1914, it has served the southern Ruhr region and connected the Rhine with the Dortmund-Ems Canal.
The Rhine-Herne Canal begins in the harbor canal of Duisburger Hafen AG. Its route follows the Emscher valley. After crossing the Emscher, it ends in the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Henrichenburg.
