The Rijselpoort is part of the fortress belt around Ypres. It is the oldest and only preserved city gate from the 14th century and connects two parts of the Ypres fortresses.
The Lille Gate is finished with Burgundian towers. It separates the Majoorgracht from the Kasteelgracht, and is a combination of a water and land gate. On the left side of the Lille Gate is the entrance to the gatekeeper's house. To the right of the gate we find the lock chamber with lock gates for the streams and settlement waters. The approximately 2.5 meters deep Ieperlee enters the city through this gate.
Old signposts to British cemeteries can still be found on the inner wall of the gate. During the war it was one of the main 'passages' to the front and was used more than the Menin Gate, because this road could be better protected against enemy artillery.
