At the entrance of the visitor center in Kemmel you can get acquainted with a very strong story about “ORIGINAL STONES”.

Some explanation: Primal stones come from the time when the earth was pushed up by the creation of the Alps. About 15 million years ago, the sea flooded our region. As the water receded, ferruginous sandbars appeared near the shoreline. Hard iron sandstones were formed through contact with oxygen.
How did this specimen get here in Kemmel?
During excavations in the past, three ancient stones were uncovered on the Kemmelberg.
The only one in the village who had a truck to transport those stones was coal merchant Oswald Homey. "He transported the stones to the village. One of those stones had been in his garden for years. The municipality of Heuvelland purchased this "primal stone" and placed it at the visitor center.
