Unfortunately, we were in this wonderful heathland at the end of September. The heather only bloomed sporadically and that was great. During the main flowering period, the heath is definitely a feast for the eyes.

The Brunssum Heath, especially when the heather is in bloom, is a must.👍👍👍
Hundreds of paths lead through the sandy landscape.
Even Komoot doesn't know them all...😉😉

The Brunssummerheide is a nature reserve of around 600 hectares in the Dutch province of Limburg between the towns of Brunssum, Heerlen and Landgraaf. It includes in particular the so-called Schrieversheide. The name Brunssummerheide is also used in a broader sense for the approximately 1800 hectare local recreation area in which this nature reserve is located. Recreational use includes hiking, cycling, golfing and horse riding. There is also an observatory and the Landgraaf Brunssummerheide, a weir more than a kilometer long, is also located in the area. The Brunssummerheide is connected to the German Natura 2000 area of the Teverener Heide via the Heidenaturpark nature bridge over the Brandenberg. These areas are part of the cross-border Heidenaturpark. (...)

        Nature

The Schrieversheide (...) is a remnant of a larger heath landscape that is now partially forested, has disappeared under a landfill or is built on. After the Second World War, it was used as a military training area. The Schrieversheide, which is described as valuable and beautiful, is one of the hilliest in the Netherlands and the only heath worth mentioning in South Limburg. The surface shape is characterized by large differences in height. The seepage pressure on the springs of the Roode Beek stream is therefore great. The heath is cut through by a very peaty and swampy stream valley with a large part of the associated vegetation. This is a special feature for the Netherlands.
Between the two world wars, lignite mining deposited a high mountain of cover sand. On June 10, 1955, after persistent rainfall, this mountain pushed sand into the former quarry and covered the swimming pool there. From 1960 to 1962, a little further away, on the border between Heerlen and Brunssum, on the Akerstraat/Heerenweg, the later natural swimming pool De Zeekoelen was built as a replacement for the buried swimming pool. In the southwest of the area, the Heksenberg borders on the district of the same name. On the southwestern edge is the Oranje-Nassau IV slag heap with rock waste from the mine. In 1985, the slag heap had an area of around 11 hectares, a height of 45 meters and a mass of 3.1 million tons. The Brunssummerheide is a Natura 2000 area.
