      First of all, I regret the other written reviews concerning this highlight. Not a single mention, despite the title of the highlight to the Belgian Monument or the history of the Refugee Camp.
      As a Belgian, I do feel a connection with this place and am grateful to the Dutch population for what they did for the Belgian citizens who fled during the Great War (1914-1918)

      I would like to provide historical context:

      The Belgian Monument is a boulder that stands on the remains of the foundation of the Ede Refugee Camp, a reception camp from the First World War (1914-1918).

      More than a million Belgians fled to the Netherlands at the time from the violence of war. Almost 6,000 men, women and children from Flanders were accommodated here on the Edese Heide between 1915 and 1918 in wooden barracks on a terrain of 30 hectares. A "model camp", equipped with all facilities such as a hospital, a church and schools. With its own central heating and electricity system.
