The Moerenpoort, which connected to the road to Visé, was built between 1257 and 1264 on the remains of the Roman ramparts from the second century AD.
In 1344, Engelbert III van der Mark became Prince-Bishop of Liège. His accession caused great tension throughout the entire principality. In 1347, the Moerenpoort was destroyed during an attack by the soldiers of the previous Prince-Bishop of Liège, Adolf II van der Mark. In 1379, the reconstruction of the Moerenpoort began. The front building, to which the wooden gate was attached to close off the passage, was destroyed by the French troops in 1673. Thanks to an agreement between the residents of the Sint-Catharina Beguinage and the troops, the Moerenpoort was spared from the French destruction...

Plans were often made to demolish the gate completely. But in 1892, thanks to the Historical and Archaeological Society, it was restored. After the gate was restored again in 1958, it was converted into a weapons museum.
The last thorough restoration dates from 2011, when a new entrance was built to the museum tower. The different floors of the tower were given their own purpose. The first floor explains the gate and its function. On the second floor, you can learn more about life in the gate and outside it. The third floor sheds light on the great fire of Tongeren in August 1677. Finally, the platform on the tower offers a beautiful view of the city, the beguinage and the De Kevie nature park.

The Moerenpoort (also called Moerepoort or Moerentoren) is the only one of the medieval city gates that still exists in Tongeren, which is fortunate because there is quite a lot to do and see. The gate is located on the remains of the city wall, near the St. Catherine beguinage and a stone's throw from the De Kevie nature reserve. In the tower itself there is a museum, spread over the different floors with sections of glass viewing floor. You will find tons of information about the city history, life in and around the tower, weaponry and events, all seasoned with beautiful museum pieces. The tower itself is also worth experiencing from the inside and, to top it all off, you can go on the roof of the tower to enjoy the views in all directions. All you need to experience it is an access code for the tower, which you can get by visiting or calling the tourist office.
