The house was built in 1717 by Mr. Hans Grossmann. It is the oldest surviving residential building in the city and is also called the "Painter's House". It survived the great city fire in 1800 because it stood outside the city wall, in the so-called suburb. In 1908 it became the property of the Arno Relius family In 1990 it was fundamentally renovated and reconstructed due to the severe damage to the beams and woodwork.
