Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (1724 to 1803) gave new impulses to the German language and can be seen as a pioneer for the generation that followed him. Klopstock is considered the founder of experiential poetry and German irrationalism. His work spanned much of the Enlightenment period. Unlike most Enlightenment thinkers, however, he was not committed to reason, but was instead considered to be a member of the so-called sensibility movement. He is also considered an important pioneer of the Sturm und Drang movement.
