The Duomo of Asti or the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is the most important religious building of the city of Asti. The immense structure has a length of eighty-two meters and is twenty-four meters wide. The current cathedral was built in the thirteenth century. The first church on this site dates from the fifth century, but was destroyed by fire in the tenth century. The second church had subsided so much that it was eventually completely replaced by the current cathedral. The Duomo of Asti is built in the Lombard Gothic style and is considered one of the finest examples of this style in Northern Italy. The interior of the cathedral is beautifully decorated with frescoes and altarpieces.
