The city church is classified since 2005 as a monument of national importance.

It was built around 1200. The three-storey foundation building is one of the earliest brick churches in northwestern Mecklenburg. Model were Westphalian hall churches whose kind is determined by equally high ships. The three-storey foundation building was built around 1200/1220 from east to west in two stages of construction. The original box choir was replaced at the beginning of the 15th century by a three-nave choir, which in contrast to the hall church consists of a high nave and smaller aisles (basilica type). At this time, the eastern chapel was built on the north side. A little later, two more additions were added. The Western Royal Chapel, founded by Agnes, Queen of Sweden and Duchess of Mecklenburg, was built in 1423. Between the two buildings, around 1466, the third chapel was added.

In the Romanesque western part, the large round window, which is unique for Mecklenburg, with its age-old rosette made of cast bronze stands out. The tower, an octagonal pyramidal helmet, dates back to 1292. Most of the equipment dates back to the 15th and 17th centuries. The 1450 bronze baptismal font is probably the most valuable piece of equipment.

In the royal chapel there are the tombstone for the Swedish Queen Agnes (1434), statues depicting Mary with the Infant Jesus, St. Jacob and St. Dionysius, remains of a Gothic altar and a panel painting with the pictures of Albrecht, King of Sweden and his son. The eight-armed brass chandelier was made in 1582, the three blakers (brass) in the 16./l7. The chandelier was designed by the local blacksmith A. Wendland in the 1970s.

The most important architectural monuments of Mecklenburg undoubtedly include the Gadebuscher Stadtkirche, which was built in the years before 1200.
The hall church is the oldest church in Mecklenburg after the chapel of Althof near Doberan. The partially man-high granite foundation supports the old brick building. Around 1200, the older Romanesque part, the western ship, was built.
By replacing the original box choir was the younger Gothic part of the church in 1405, a three-nave choir of a tall nave and smaller aisles (basilica-type). At the same time, the eastern chapel on the north side, the Sankt Annenkapelle, was built.
