Before the post office was built, the Jankesche Haus, a small inn with a place to relax, was located at the former horse market. The main building of the post office was erected in 1884 by the Wolgast master builder and senator Max Heinrichs and was able to start operations in the city in 1885. Only in 1902, until then only tenants, was the Reichspost named as the owner in the land register files.
The building is now over 130 years old. The post and telegraph offices of this type were built in many small, medium-sized and larger towns. They mostly have a high design similarity, since since 1875 the buildings have been planned centrally by the Imperial Post Office through its construction department and executed and monitored by the responsible Oberpostdirektion. It is a 2-storey historicist clinker building in the neo-Gothic style with 4 corner projections and a stepped gable. The architectural appearance is a successful example of the Wilhelminian - historical utility building construction of that time.
Post and Telekom used the building for their own purposes until April 2006 when operations in the Alte Post in Wolgast were discontinued. Since May 2014, the private Postel Wolgast offers both private rooms and dormitories.
