The paddle steamer "Oden" ran aground and was shipwrecked on August 9th
1836
The Royal Swedish paddle steamer "Oden" ran aground and sank off Thyborøn in 1836. The ship brought the Royal Swedish Minister of Justice from Sweden to London. On the way home it had loaded valuable general cargo. Several barons and other nobles were on board as passengers, when it stranded.
It was possible to save the people safely, but the ship became a wreck.
With a bit of luck, part of the cargo could be salvaged, but bad luck and bad weather prevailed. A large, valuable copper cauldron rolled off the salvage boat en route to land and was
not found again. Today, west of breakwater 59, at a depth of 20 m of water, divers can see the remains of the ship - namely a square steel steam boiler and a heavy wooden ship's side with large bolts and nuts.
With the first steamships, which were still made of wood, it was feared that
that the vibrations of the machine could loosen the bolts and planks. That didn't happen, as far as we know today. But with nuts on all bolts, you at least had the ability to retighten the bolts.
This wreck clearly shows how far the coast has receded in this area over time. A ship stranded on a sandbar close to shore in 1836 is now lying at a depth of 20 m, almost 4 km offshore.
