The most important sight in this district is the Gleuel moated castle in the center of the town, surrounded by a beautiful park. The oldest part of the Baroque complex is the southwest wing, facing the park, with its curved stepped gable. The taller wing, facing the castle courtyard, was added to the older southwest wing by the then new owner, Johann von Cöllen, according to a date in the gable apex in 1632.

In 1976, the family of architect Ulrich Ahlert acquired the property and has since had the main house extensively restored and the outer bailey largely rebuilt.

In late Franconian times, in a document dated June 4, 898, the king of the Lotharingian empire, Zwentibold, donated a salhof in Gleuel (Gloulo) with 12 other hooves and the church, as well as goods in Selstena (Sielsdorf) to the Essen Monastery. This speaks both for the old age of the castle courtyard and for the church. The castle and the town came into the possession of the cathedral in the middle of the 13th century. The lieutenant Gerard von Gleuele fought with the Cologne against the Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden in 1260.
