he Vischpoort, built at the end of the 14th century, is one of the two original gates on the sea side of Harderwijk (the other gate no longer exists). In the past, through this gate the fish caught, which had entered the city through the Hoge Bruggepoort, were brought back to the botters after sale for transport elsewhere.[1] The gate also had a protective function, against enemies as well as against the water, and was closed at high tide. The houses on the Vischmarkt are built somewhat higher and/or have a flood chamber, so that the residents still kept their feet dry if the gate was closed too late. A part of the old city wall of Harderwijk is still present around the gate. The Harderwijk lighthouse was built on top of the Vischpoort in the 19th century. From the time of the Zuiderzee until the closure of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, it had an important function. In 1947 the light was extinguished. Today it is only lit on special occasions.
