One of the oldest remaining memorial stones in the city forest is the Schillerstein.

In 1906, citizens of Gelnhausen inaugurated a monument in the forest above Barbarossa town in honor of the Swabian poet Friedrich Schiller and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death. In the then circular number 65 it was pointed out that the inauguration of the Schillerstein will take place on June 2nd at 5 p.m. after a joint march towards the east / Heinrichshöhe.

With the music playing, a larger crowd moved to the new stone. The program included singing lectures, inauguration speeches, handover of the Schillerstein, laying down of wreath donations, Bengali lighting around 9 p.m. and marching back to the log cabin.

When thieves tampered with the bronze plate during the Second World War, the plate was removed and replaced with a mineral one. The cast plate was later returned to its original place.

100 years later, the memorial stone suffered a similar fate. A major part of the memorial stone, the Schiller plaque, was unfortunately stolen. The Gelnhausen Tourist Office took the initiative and arranged for a replacement. A mineral imprint is now on the Schillerstein and a second bronze copy is attached in the entrance area of the town hall.
