In Zadar, as in Rome, there is a Roman Forum in the middle of the city. This was once surrounded by porticoes and statues. Today, in the shadow of the tamarisk trees, you can admire the paving stones polished by millions of feet. If you look closely, you will notice that the nearby church of Sveti Donat is almost entirely made of marble from the Roman Forum.

The Roman Forum in Zadar was founded on the recommendation of the first Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus. The forum was the center of public life, now you can only admire its fragments, including stairs, stone walkway and monumental columns and the foundations of the Church of St. Donatana.
One of the surviving pillars served as a pillory, people who were going to be publicly punished for theft, fraud and other crimes were tied to it. The remains of the sacrificial altar on which animals were laid were also found in the forum.
The forum was damaged by an earthquake in the 6th century, the surrounding buildings collapsed, and their remains were used to build other facilities, such as churches.
