St. Nicholas tunnel

The St. Nicholas tunnel was approached in 1611 in order to drive under the ores of the upper tunnel. Because of the hard rock, the flooding and the dangerous work, the miners made very slow progress. Only after 87 years of driving with mallets and irons did they reach the ore deposit 1000 meters down the mountain. A large wall was built above the mouth of the tunnel to protect against avalanches.

The ore-bearing rock that was crushed into sand in the stamp mills was sieved and then separated on the so-called washing hearths. In the process, the lighter "deaf" sand was swept away by the water, leaving the heavier ore behind.
