St. Leonhardt Pilgrimage Church

Since 1599, processions and pilgrimages to a small forest chapel dedicated to St. Leonhard near Hetzenbach have been documented. The current pilgrimage church, which was made possible by donations and offerings during the cattle epidemics of 1728 and 1742, was built between 1762 and 1764 under the direction of the electoral master mason Christoph Thomas Wolff from Stadtamhof on the square strewn with enormous granite rocks south of the Regensburg thoroughfare, and was completed in 1764.
The Rococo building with a recessed and rounded choir, a pressed shell vault and pointed caps above pilasters, decorated only with stucco frames, impresses with its simple uniformity as well as the spaciousness of the complex.
It is a conventional building, 27 m long and 10 m wide.
The high altar shows St. Leonhard as abbot, as he "enters the grounds of his Lord as a faithful Christian amid the cheers of the blessed spirits". The Regensburg saints Wolfgang and Emmeram stand as altar guards to the left and right.
The organ was donated by Count Joseph August von Törring-Gutenzell and was made in 1818 for the Falkenstein Castle Church.
The pilgrimage church was last thoroughly restored in 1985; the foundation walls were also drained. The organ was overhauled in 2001. The tower was renovated and the dome was renewed in 2002. A tower clock was installed.
In the center of the small vaulted Leonhard Chapel, the group of figures "St. Leonhard with Oxen" was placed on a blackened steel base. The only 70 cm high figure of the patron saint, which had previously been provisionally placed on the pews in the nave, found a suitable place. The approximately 150 historical votive animals, measuring 7 - 20 cm, that were previously kept in the sacristy, were permanently attached to the back wall of the new chapel. To protect them from theft, the animals, which were held in place with magnets, were secured with glass panes.
