Philosopher's Trail Triesenberg
A hike on natural paths in a rich Walser cultural landscape.
This beautiful hike starts high above the village of Triesenberg in the hamlet of Gnalp at 1201 m above sea level. The path first leads north on the Philosopher's Trail to the small Walser settlement of Masescha. It is worth stopping off at the Masescha mountain restaurant and enjoying the famous covered apple pie on the sunny terrace.
After this refreshment, the route continues to the scattered settlement of Vorder-Profatscheng at 1210 m above sea level and then slightly downhill to Hinter-Profatscheng at 1110 m above sea level. The view of the Rhine Valley and the beautiful, tanned Walser houses as well as the well-kept cultural landscape make this path a special experience. From Hinter-Profatscheng, the mountain path is well marked and leads up 350 meters in altitude through sparse mountain forest to Gaflei at 1483 m above sea level. The climb is worth it, because the view from Gaflei into the valley is spectacular. It is not surprising that tourism in Liechtenstein began right here with the construction of the spa house around 1908. After the steep climb to Gaflei, the walk continues comfortably via Silum 1469 m above sea level back to the starting point Gnalp 1201 m above sea level and from there back to Rizlina.

In the mountain restaurant, it is worth taking a seat on the sunny terrace or in the typical Walser parlor and tasting the famous apple pie. After refreshment, the route continues to the scattered settlement of Vorder-Prufatscheng and slightly downhill to Hinter-Prufatscheng, the lowest point of the tour. The view of the Rhine Valley and the beautiful, tanned Walser houses make this route a special experience. Speaking of Walsers: Up to this point, the hike runs along a themed trail that tells the story of the Walser community of Triesenberg on information boards.
Now comes the main climb: the mountain trail is well marked and leads around 350 meters in altitude through sparse mountain forest up to Gaflei (1483 m above sea level). Gaflei was the first health resort in the region and thus also marks the beginning of Liechtenstein's tourism history. The health resort hotel is no longer in operation, but Gaflei is still a popular recreation area today.
