    The Schwalheim wheel was part of the so-called waterworks of Bad Nauheim, which, in addition to the windworks (originally consisting of two windmills), served to pump the brine to the graduation towers. However, since the river Wetter, which drove the water, was some distance from the graduation towers, a wooden rod almost a kilometer long, including a deflection joint, was built to operate the pumps at the graduation tower. Around 200 meters of it are still preserved today and testify to the enormous technical effort involved in extracting salt from the Bad Nauheim brine at that time.

    Another preserved part of the waterworks is the water wheel at the Ludwigsbrunnen in nearby Bad Nauheim, which is worth a visit. The neighboring graduation tower was also the end point of the rods connected to the Schwalheim wheel.

      The original Schwalheim wheel, also known as the Great Wheel, was built between 1745 and 1748 as part of the expansion of the Nauheim salt works under the aegis of Jacob Sigismund Waitz von Eschen, chief salt officer in Hesse-Kassel. The diameter is 9.80 meters. The water wheel consists of 84 blades that are 1.25 meters wide. At least as impressive is the 1.3 kilometer long pumping station rod that is driven by it. The water power of the Wetter river was used by the Schwalheim waterworks to drive the pumps that transported the brine to the Nauheim graduation towers.
