About history:

In the following centuries the Elbe shifted west towards Schönebeck and Magdeburg. An interim river course from Ranies via Grünewalde and Randaunach Salbke has been preserved as the Old Elbe. [1]
A suggestion for the construction of a circulation channel was contained in the memorandum in the so-called Elbenauer dyke regulation case from 1865, which was created with the significant participation of the Prussian civil engineer Hermann Wurffbain (1804-1889). The canal should follow the old course of the Elbe on the eastern edge of the glacial valley. The drainage through the canal should be regulated by a fixed weir at pretzias.
