      Border Saar area - German Reich 1910 - 1935

      Today's Saarland is characterized by a long tradition as a border region. After the First World War, the "Saar area" became independent through the Treaty of Versailles. However, the new state territory only included parts of what is now the state of Saarland. The smuggling of food and clothing from the Reich into the Saar region was lucrative for the inhabitants of the border region. For example, the market in Wadern was used for shopping. Armed customs officers were supposed to prevent the smuggling. Stories of diversionary maneuvers for the customs officers are still told today. With the piglet in the rucksack, they went to the secret border crossing in the Sollbachtal late in the evening. The smuggling period ended with the referendum in 1935, in which over 90% of those entitled to vote voted for the Saar area to be incorporated into the German Reich.
