East of the Oberasbacher districts Altenberg and Unterasbach is the nature reserve Hainberg, with the largest contiguous sandy dry grassland in northern Bavaria.

Through the terrain flows the Kreuzbach, which forms a pear-shaped in the middle of the pond. This small stream is also called Asbach (from which the place name derives) and is located exclusively on Oberasbacher municipality. In the upper part in the second half of the 19th century, heavily straightened and channeled for agriculture, restrained restoration measures since 1990, in the area of Hainberg more natural course with the artificial pond. It ends at the remote bridge between Oberasbach and Nuremberg in the Rednitz.

The Hainberg nature reserve is located on the Rednitz in the area of the cities of Oberasbach and Stein (district of Fürth) and to a small part of the city of Nuremberg. The nature reserve, which is part of the Sandachse Franken nature conservation project, has existed since March 1, 1995[1] and is around 213 hectares[2]. On its site there was previously a training ground for the US Army and the Bundeswehr Transport Battalion 270 stationed in Nuremberg. 195 hectares of the area are therefore managed by the DBU Natural Heritage as a natural heritage area.

The Hainberg is a beautiful nature reserve with a bird protection zone. Many beautiful paths lead through the extensive area.
In 1632 Wallenstein's troops camped here before the battle with the Swedish king Gustav Adolf around the old fortress.

To the east of the Oberasbach districts of Altenberg and Unterasbach is the Hainberg nature reserve, with the largest contiguous dry sandy grassland area in northern Bavaria. Until the early 1990s, the Hainberg was still used as a US Army training area.

The Kreuzbach flows through the area, forming a pear-shaped pond in the middle. This small stream is also called Asbach (from which the place name derives) and is located exclusively in the Oberasbach municipal area. The upper part was heavily straightened and channeled for agriculture in the second half of the 19th century, restrained renaturation measures since 1990, in the Hainberg area more natural course with the artificially created pond. It flows into the Rednitz at the Ferna Bridge between Oberasbach and Nuremberg.

DBU Naturerbe GmbH, a subsidiary of the German Federal Environmental Foundation, has owned the Hainberg area since 2010. She is responsible for securing and maintaining the natural heritage areas. Together with the Federal Agency for Real Estate (BImA), Federal Forestry Division, DBU Naturerbe GmbH preserves and optimizes valuable habitats for native animal and plant species. The areas should also serve as places for people to relax.

Very nice area. There is a circular route that leads once on the outer edge, From Hainberg you can also follow the Rednitz in both directions and make great tours!

The area includes the largest sandy grassland in Northern Bavaria. Typical of this landscape form are the low water storage capacity, the low nutrient content of the soil and the extreme temperature differences compared to other biotopes in Central Europe. The loose vegetation, often interrupted by areas of sand, consists of grasses and low-growing herbs. What is special about the vegetation of the Hainberg is the light, brownish coloring of the lawns.

The nature reserve is a habitat and retreat for many endangered plants and animals.

Among other things, the sand grass carnation, the heather carnation, the sand thyme, the silver grass, the mountain sanddrop[3] and the early hair grass[4] occur. A special feature is the occurrence of Austrian mugwort, which is said to have been planted by Croatian soldiers as a wine spice during the Thirty Years' War; the Hainberg was part of the Wallenstein camp near Zirndorf in 1632.[2]

The insect fauna of the Hainberg includes sand bees, the blue-winged grasshopper[4] and the swallowtail. Among the amphibians, the Natterjack Toad and the Common Spadefoot Toad should be mentioned.[4] Rare bird species in the area include the golden oriole, the wheatear, the red-backed shrike, the whitethroat,[3] the kingfisher, the tawny pipit and the woodlark[2].
