The landmark of the spa town of St. Märgen are the two bright church towers of the abbey church of the Assumption. The history of the place is closely linked to the history of the monastery of St. Märgen. From 1115 to 1118, Count Bruno von Haigerloch-Wiesneck, chancellor of Heinrich V and Strasbourg cathedral provost, built the Augustinian monastery of Maria-Zell in the Black Forest as a competitor to the nearby monastery of St. Peter in the Black Forest. In the 1460s, due to continued difficulties, the monks moved to the Augustinian Canons' Monastery of All Saints in Freiburg im Breisgau. After his demise, the monastery was revived and from 1716 a baroque monastery church with two towers and new convent buildings were erected. A Silbermann organ was installed in the church. In 1806 the monastery was finally dissolved in the course of secularization; the organ survived, but only until the church fire caused by lightning in 1911.
