The Rheinbaben stockpile is located in Gladbeck between Ellinghorst and Bottrop-Boy south of the A2. Overburden from the Rheinbaben colliery was deposited on the heap. After the colliery was closed in 1967, the site was largely left to its own devices. Since 2001 it has been designated as a nature reserve and can be accessed by walking paths.

The heap, about 20 hectares in size and on the south side about 20 meters above the surrounding level, together with the Ellinghorst heap north of the A2, is part of the Gladbeck landscape plan no.4. The aim is to preserve and further develop natural habitats. In addition, the heap serves for scientific observation, its unguided, spontaneous greening is compared with the planned recultivation of other heap.

The site is bordered in the east by a railway line, in the south by the Rheinbaben colliery and in the west by the Boye. The heap itself is overgrown with a sparse birch forest, in the steep and partially unstable areas on the edge of the summit and on the slopes there are still half-open grass fields. Sycamore maples have settled in the northeast, hornbeams and red oaks in the east, and there is also a recultivated forest of gray alder and red oaks. The forest areas also contain portions of dead wood. There are some wetlands due to bomb funnels and water ditches. The biotope is very rich in structure, the sometimes extremely dry and warm, in other places very acidic locations offer space for appropriate specialists such as reptiles, butterflies and locusts.
