The Pont du Gard is a Roman aqueduct bridge built over the Gardon. It is an architectural splendor, superbly preserved, and the site is truly grandiose. There are many tourists there, some bathe in the Gardon. The site being very extensive, there is enough to find a quiet space for picnicking and playing with the children.

The Pont du Gard is the most famous and important aqueducts of the Gallo-Roman era and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
This ancient bridge is a masterpiece of architecture of the time, supplying the city of Nîmes with its nearly 50-kilometer-long aqueduct daily with around 20,000 liters of fresh water.
At the Pont du Gard there is the possibility to have a meal at the restaurant with a breathtaking view and also a refreshing dip in the Gardon. Another option is to visit the Pont du Gard by canoe from a single perspective. An adjoining museum explains the history of the Pont du Gard.

The Pont du Gard became a pilgrimage site for master stonemasons from the 17th century. They carved their coats of arms in the stone.
Various stonemason's marks can be seen on the bridge

The Pont du Gard is one of the best preserved Roman structures in all of Europe. Magnificent, imposing, downright ingenious. The Pont du Gard is nothing more than part of an aqueduct that crosses the Gard River and at that time supplied the city of Nîmes with fresh drinking water from the springs near Uzès. The Pont du Gard impresses both aesthetically and through its technical implementation. Actually, it is no longer in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, but in the neighboring Gard department (Avignon: 21 km; Nîmes: 27 km). From a tourist point of view, this corner is still part of Provence. Due to its uniqueness, a visit should not be missed.

Time ! - you should definitely bring plenty. I have also experienced this today and will add another day to enjoy everything that nature offers in combination with more priority in the building to the fullest once again.

The Pont du Gard is about halfway along the great railway cycle path between Uzès and Beaucaire.
Coming from the north, past the huge car and bus parking lot, there is a cycle path that is well signposted and leads directly to the bridge, over which you "have to" push yourself. The wide promenade leads over the first of three bridge levels and there is no entrance fee. If you like, you can walk/drive in all directions on both sides of the bridge, have a picnic, swim or just enjoy the magnificent view.

To relieve the Roman aqueduct, whose construction may have taken place between 40 and 60 AD, from the abuse of traffic it was not designed for, a new bridge was built by the engineer Henri Pitot in 1743–47 next to the arches of the lower level, so that the road traffic could cross on a purpose-built bridge. Since 1996 the entire area was converted to just pedestrian and bike travel, making it a pleasant experience despite the millions of annual visitors.

Very beautiful greenway, pleasant to ride, quiet. We share it with other cyclists, young and old, pedestrians, hikers and joggers without forgetting rollerblades, all in good humor and respect.
