Purple-flowering heather, juniper, and Heidschnucke sheep, as well as deep forests, moors, and streams, characterize the landscape of the Lüneburg Heath. In August and September, this area transforms into a shimmering purple sea of flowers, but the region is also worth visiting at other times of the year.

The Lüneburg Heath lies in the triangle of cities between Hamburg, Bremen, and Hanover
and stretches from the Elbe River in the northeast to the Aller River in the southwest. The landscape gives the purple-flowering plant its name, as heath means "deserted plateau." And it's true: surrounded by damp lowlands, the dry and sandy heathland rises. Ice Age glaciers shaped the area in northeastern Lower Saxony: hills rise here and there – the highest of which is the Wilseder Berg at almost 170 meters.

Although the landscape has existed for thousands of years, it was only through human cultivation that the heathland as we know it today emerged – as a sea of flowers and grazing land for Heidschnucke sheep.
