"The group of houses in Haagstraße was built in the Oranian period. Wall anchors and a building inscription (on the upper floor) give the year 1640 as the construction date. After the city of Moers was taken in 1601, Moritz von Oranien (1567-1625) had strong fortifications built started around the castle and town, which was completed in 1620. The almost square new town was expanded by bastions and ravelins placed in front of it at great depth.The moats of the medieval fortifications have been filled since 1617. New streets were laid out in their place: Niederstraße, Fieselstraße and the Hochstrasse (today Haagstrasse).

The city was able to sell eleven building sites on the resulting trapezoidal site on Hochstrasse. Gerhardt Becker took places 9 and 11, the businessman Conradt Ponten the place in between. Three mighty brick buildings were erected here, as shown in the copper engraving from the 17th century. They were later divided into today's five units. The walls were plastered bright red with offset joints. In the 19th century, some of the houses were given plaster facades; During restorations since 1980, the masonry (except for one house) was uncovered again. The purpose of the stately houses has not been handed down, but was probably related to the heyday of Moers in the Orange 17th century, which brought merchants and the military to the city. So it is conceivable that the houses and the storage floors were perhaps rented separately.
