The church is mentioned as early as 1300, so it was probably built in the Gothic style at the end of the 13th century. The interior, the altars and the tower were baroque in the second half of the 17th century. The church is under monument protection.

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1270. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Gmunden became a trading point for salt and thus prosperous. In Gmunden, there was only one chapel, the Anna Chapel, to the northwest of the later parish church. It later served as a cemetery chapel and was demolished in 1844. All that remains of it is the gate, which forms the tower gate of the current church. The three-aisled basilica was built in the Gothic style near the outflow of Lake Traunsee. Remains of Gothic frescoes from that period have been preserved inside.
