As a stage for open-air concerts and theater performances, the ruins of St. Catherine's Church exude a magic all their own. For many Nuremberg residents, however, it is above all one of the few remaining visible reminders of the heavy bombing raids during the Second World War.
The Gothic Pfeiffer Basilica once belonged to St. Catherine's Monastery, which was famous throughout Europe for its unique library, but was no longer allowed to accept novices after the Reformation. From 1620 to the end of the 18th century, the Nuremberg Mastersingers held their singing competitions in St. Catherine's Church. There is hardly a more historic place for concerts and open-air theater in Nuremberg.

The St. Catherine's Monastery in Nuremberg is a former women's monastery of the Dominican Order in Nuremberg in Bavaria in the diocese of Bamberg, famous for its medieval library.
The St. Catherine Open Air takes place here every year in June/July, a festival of various music genres with national and international bands and solo artists from jazz and classical to folk, pop, indie and world music. Dance and theater performances complement the program.🤩🤩🤩

The monastery was founded in 1295 by Konrad von Neumarkt and his wife Adelheid from the Nuremberg patrician family of Pfinzing von Henfenfeld. The monastery church, which is also notable for its architectural features, was consecrated in 1297. The monastery gained particular importance in the course of the church reform efforts of the early 15th century, when it was reformed in 1428 from the Schönensteinbach monastery, not least at the instigation of the Nuremberg council, and adopted strict rule observance. From then on, a flourishing spiritual and intellectual life developed, so that the monastery soon assumed a leading position among the Dominican monasteries in the province of Teutonia. Numerous other monasteries were also reformed from St. Catherine's Monastery.[1] However, after the imperial city of Nuremberg joined the Lutheran Reformation, the convent was doomed to extinction after 1525, despite attempts at resistance. After the death of the last members of the monastery in 1596, the monastery was dissolved.

From then until 1620, the monastery buildings were used as a meeting room for the Nuremberg Mastersingers, who were then housed in St. Catherine's Church until 1778. In 1699, the Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1662, moved into the buildings and held its courses there until the end of the imperial city period in 1806. The former monastery thus became one of the most important places for art school education in the Baroque period in Germany.

The rooms then served various secular and cultural purposes, including as a political meeting place during the revolution of 1848 and as a temporary exhibition space for the Imperial Regalia (1938/39) during the National Socialist era. After being destroyed by air raids in 1945, the former monastery church of St. Catherine has been used for events such as open-air concerts since the ruins were secured in 1970/71 because of its special acoustics.
