    This burial mound dates from about 1400 BC. Special finds have been made in this burial mound, including gold earrings, a bronze ax and bronze arrowheads. This makes it one of the 'richest' burial mounds in Drenthe. Because of these finds, it is said that this man must have had a unique position, which is why it is also referred to as the 'chieftain of the Sleenerzand'. In later times, from the Middle Ages, this burial mound was also used as a gallows mountain.       Many traces of the past can be found in Sleenerzand. Glacier pits can still be seen in the northern part of the forest range. In the southern part are burial mounds, dolmen D49 Papeloze Kerk and Celtic Fields. These are remnants of arable complexes from the Iron Age.

      The Galgenberg is very special. The headman of the Sleenerzand was buried in this burial mound almost 3,500 years ago. He was given his golden earrings, bronze ax and arrows. A garland of posts was erected around the burial mound. This was a sign that the dead should be left alone. The wreath was reconstructed in 1996.
