    "... The Church of St. Barbara is a Catholic church in the Dümpten district of Mülheim. The current church building was erected between 1953 and 1955 in the New Objectivity style and was inaugurated on March 20, 1955.
    History: The founding of the St. Barbara community in Dümpten dates back to 1884. Since industrialization and the growing number of parishioners in the parish of St. Marien became too cramped, a church building association was founded. It was not until 1887 that the new church could finally be inaugurated.
    From 1910, the idea of constructing a new church building for the growing industrial site came up. It was not until 1929 that the idea was revived. A collection was held in all churches of the Archdiocese of Cologne to finance the church in Dümpten. The church should cost 175,000 marks. The collection raised 16,736.50 marks. Ultimately, the construction project failed due to the effects of the global economic crisis in 1931.
    During the Second World War, Allied bombing raids in 1943/1944 destroyed the church building. Since the plans for the construction of a new church were rejected by the British occupying power after the end of the war, the later rectory served as an emergency church from 1946. In 1952 the church building association resumed its activities and decided to build the new St. Barbara Church at the foot of the Schildberg. The cornerstone was laid in 1953 and it was inaugurated in 1955. In 1968 major renovations took place, during which the interior was redesigned.
    As a Catholic church with a mining tradition, the community also feels very close to the miner, trade unionist and Nazi resistance fighter Nikolaus Groß from Niederwenigern (Hattingen), who was beatified by Pope John Paul II. In 2001, a memorial cross was erected at the church in honor of him and his comrades-in-arms in the Catholic resistance, Otto Müller and Bernhard Letterhaus. ..."
