Eggenberg Castle offers very good and educational tours, where you learn, for example, that it is the only castle in Europe that is still lit with candles (on special occasions). The visit is highly recommended!

In 1625, Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg built an outstanding example of harmonious architecture with his castle, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010. In addition, Eggenberg is considered the most important castle in Styria. Today it belongs to the Universalmuseum Joanneum.

    Architectural allegory of the universe
Many architectural details of Schloss Eggenberg represent the cosmos. In the planetary hall from 1678, the seven celestial bodies known at the time are shown in a ceiling painting, the twelve signs of the zodiac on the walls. Other elements of the castle contain allusions to time.
