An ingenious system enabled the soil to explode in the event of a threat, so that the sand, gravel and rubble that had been stored in the soil was poured over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. The channel was thus closed. The system of the explosive lock also ensured that daily shipping was not hindered by the structure. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), this ingenious system was never used; the lock was finally only completed in 1942 and in the meantime another development had gone very quickly: the plane was used in the war.
