    The predecessor institution of the Wertheim Collegiate Church was the Wertheim parish church with the patronage of St. Maria and the residence of the Counts of Wertheim. Since the year 1378 clergy from the Cistercian monastery Bronnbach held the service here. The foundation stone for a three-aisled pillar basilica with an elongated choir - the later collegiate church - was laid on June 24, 1384. This church was the result of a previous Romanesque building from around 1200, from which parts were taken over. The order of the Wertheim parish church was laid down in a chapter constitution on January 17, 1419. In addition to the pastor, this also included the vicars for eleven altars. The Würzburg Cathedral was considered a liturgical model. In addition, a separation into clerical and lay churches was enforced. The rood screen required for this was built in 1442. This foundation, which was built on the model of a collegiate church, found further reorganizations in the chapter constitution in 1434 and 1440. In 1474 was by Count Johann III. von Wertheim (1454–1497) reorganized the beneficiary property.
