Attention, it's uphill! The Gotegemberg is called "mountain" and is actually a hill - but do not underestimate it. Its height difference is about 35 meters. Cyclists hate it because there is a section that has a casual 18 percent incline - but you do that with your left hand and you hardly break a sweat ?!

Below the mountain you will find a fish pond and a historic water mill (the Gotegemmolen), which is no longer in operation.

This is where cycling legend Lucien Van Impe often trained as a young rider.
The Gotemberg was part of his daily training route. He climbed this hill countless times. It's the steepest slope in the Mere area. His father, Jozef, closely monitored his lap times and encouraged him to practice more and harder. Here, Lucien Van Impe laid the foundation for his later success and major victories in his cycling career. Lucien was the last Belgian to win the Tour de France in 1976, and he took home the Polka Dot Jersey for the King of the Mountains classification several times.
